Battle of the Banners

I have no idea how this appears to our readers (a quick lunchtime job thrown together on Corel Draw 8.0) but if you have any suggestions fire away in the comments.

Of course this is in response to those keeners out west, but as a humbling gesture you'll note that I was unable to locate any colour photography with which to commemorate past victories. Rest assured this matter will be rectified in short order.

  1. That font is generally reserved for promoting Wild West Shows, but it looks pretty cool to me.

Humbling indeed, although the years since Alberta owned the Cup are piling up fast too...

  2. We only had 7 players on our last cup winning team?

    Man we were awesome!

  3. A versatile bunch indeed.

    From Chris "Amazing Stories" Robinson:

During the 1923 playoffs, Ottawa goalie Clint Benedict was assessed a minor penalty. In those days, the goalie had to serve the penalty. Senators forward King Clancy was forced to take Benedict's place.

Clancy ended up playing every position that night, the only time that's happened in NHL history

  4. Seriously, what is with Al Swearengen's Gem Saloon font?

The rest is quite good for a first pass. Kinda figures a Sens fan would be using a Corel product, tho.

  5. Swearengen on the Leafs:

"Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair or fucking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back."

  6. Glad to see you're working hard to make my drunken punditry more visually appealing.

Thar font is just offensive enough to work. :)

Seriously though, with a font that big and pictures that small you'd probably be better off with PNG or at least GIF. It's gonna be cached for most of the visitors, so size doesn't matter so much, and actually all that black and which space will actually save smaller in those schemes. The JPG compression is lossy and the artifacts stop the title form popping the way it should.

    Nice work.

  7. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll fiddle around with it some more and see what turns out. Meantime that's the first draft for now.

  8. i think you should include a sens/leaf fight in the middle, rather than the highway sign

  9. If you can't find a decent shot of long timers Chara vs. Domi, I think this would be an acceptable substitute.
